Bernick’s Periodic Table of Beer

When you hear “periodic table” you might have flashbacks (either good or bad) of chemistry class. Although I’m sure that particular table is helpful for determining the chemical makeup of an atom (or whatever it is used for), the team at Bernick’s found this table to be a little more enjoyable (and fun); it’s a periodic table of beer.

Technically, a periodic table is “a table of elements arranged based on various configurations and similar properties”. So yes, it works for beer similar to the way it works for elements.

Bernick's Periodic Table of Beer

There are a few things I’d like to elaborate on to help answer any additional questions you may have after studying our periodic table of beer, and also because I love talking about all things beer.

1. How Does this Periodic Table of Beer Help Me?

Aside from looking really cool and giving you a glimpse of just how many beers there are out there, this table can also help bar, restaurant, and other beer-serving establishment owners. One main point I hope to show in this periodic table of beer is just how many types of beer are truly out there. While there are some that are more popular than others, you can see by this table that there is something for just about every taste palate. As a bartender, server, or business owner, you can understand how important it is to have something on tap or in the cooler that can be enjoyed by a variety of patrons. Although there is an ebb and flow to popular beer styles, seasonal brews, and light or dark preference, it is always good for business to be known for your diverse options. Why not have a print out of this periodic table in your establishment and track what kinds of brews you have, or what are most popular? Fun for you, and your customers.

2. Does the Style of Beer Glass Really Matter?

It may seem silly, but yes. According to BeerAdvocate, some beer ‘novices’ say that beer glassware is just another form of marketing, but that is far from true. When a beer is poured, its taste, smell, and color are all altered. The foam can change, the aroma can differ, and oils can be more or less absorbed.  During the pouring and drinking process, some features of your beer become more or less pronounced while they are consumed. Beer is more deeply appreciated as not only a beverage, but as a tasting experience when served in the properly paired glass.

3. Does this Cover all Styles of Beer?

As mentioned previously, there are countless different types of brews and styles of beer out there, and there is simply no way I could have organized them all into one table. And though much of our beer experience is emphasized on craft beer, we included a variety of domestic, imports, and specialty beers on this table as well. Considering all this, our team based our periodic table off of brews in our region and what information is most widespread throughout the craft and domestic beer industries. We wanted to collect the best, most interesting beer-related information and organize it in a fun, shareable way. Our aim in putting together this specific periodic table was to help you track what types of beer are what, and how they generally differ from one another. Although we are beer experts, we are always learning, and wanted to take you along that journey with us. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
